IVC filters are most appropriately used for patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) who have contraindications to anticoagulation therapy. These devices are designed to prevent embolization of thrombi from the lower extremities to the lungs, thereby reducing the risk of pulmonary embolism.

In patients with DVT, anticoagulation is typically the standard treatment. In these cases, IVC filters serve as a valuable alternative by mechanically filtering out clots from the venous blood before they can reach the pulmonary circulation.
